Snow and Scraps

I didn't realize I had been absent so long until I finally sat down and checked today. I've been here plugging along at home and at work so here's what's up.

We have had an incredible amount of snow and cold here this winter but today it's in the high 50's. I went to the store without a coat on-epic! Tomorrow it's supposed to be cold and wintery again. New England weather is like that. Here's what my husband was doing a couple of weeks ago.
We had an incredible amount of snow on the roof and there had been a number of roof collapses in NH so he got up there and shoveled. Scares the you know what out of me when he does this.

I also have finished the Blue Star quilt I had made. I love scrap quilts and this is one of my favorites. There are a lot of different fabrics in here which is why I love scrap quilts. I think it gives quilts a completely different look than one made with a fabric collection that has 40 fabrics, many of them pattern repeats, in them.

I even did a scrappy backing with leftover fabrics and orphan blocks. The star blocks you see were ones I cut wrong but I put them together anyway and they lok fine back here.

Here's a better closeup of the quilting.

I even did a scrappy binding. Whenever I make a quilt and have left over binding I throw the extra into a hat box I have. So I got the box out and pulled all the blues and put together a binding. I love the way it looks on this quilt.

So I have no idea what's next. Probably not much as I am having shoulder problems and am scheduled to have some surgery on it March 4th. Not looking forward to that but it needs doing. It's bad when the parts start failing!

  1. I love the scrappy blue quilt and the backing. I agree that scrappy quilts have so much character. Each one is an "I Spy"

  2. Love the quilt, makes me want to dive head first into my scrap pile and get creative.

Do not like the sight of that crazy old fart Michael up on the roof. It's one thing to take care of the roof on the lower original part of the house, but that family room roof is really high!

  4. Perhaps your DH wears cleated golf shoes or some other safety device?

Scrappy quilts are my favorite too, yours is great. Quilting looks like a panto? Would you share the name?

  5. Your quilt is wonderful. It looks cozy and comfy and everything that a scrap quilt should be. Here in Pennsylvania, the snow is gradually melting. It is almost 70 degrees right now, but will go back down to the 30's tonight & then drop over the course of the next several days to 18 at night. Crazy crazy weather.

  9. Oh, I can answer the above question about Michael wearing a safety something--the answer is a resounding NO, right Chris? I've known Michael for 40 years, let's see if I've guessed right.

  10. Yes, Angela wins the prize for knowing that Mike did indeed not have any safety equipment on. In his words, "I don't need no stinkin' safety equipment"!!!

  13. You wouldn't want to see the statistics on 1. the number of people injured or killed in Japan by falling off roofs or 2. the number killed or injured by snow falling off roofs. Either way...
The scrappy quilt is just beautiful. It's one thing having lots of scraps on hand and another knowing how to use them.

  17. I had to laugh when I read your comment about going to the store with no coat in 50 degree weather. Isn't it funny how warm 50 can feel when it's been so nasty. But in the fall when it's 50 we wear a jacket? :) Love the quilt!

  18. I too just finished a scrappy blue quilt and I love it. I haven't got it bound yet. You have really gotten the winter weather this year, those icicles look amazing, but I know it's not really what you want to see. Great finds at your quilt shop~d

  22. I am a big fan of scrappy too and yours is simply gorgeous. I have got to start piecing my backings as I do like the look but by the time I get to that point I am just ready to get 'er done and don't take the time to piece a backing. Cute idea on piecing the binding.
