The Baby's Quilt

I recently posted some fabric that I was going to use in a baby quilt here that I am making for my first grandchild who will arrive in about 7 weeks. I am redecorating my daughter's bedroom so the baby will have a place to nap when he or she is visiting. So I got busy over the past weekend and put it all together and here it is before I bring it to my long arm quilter. It's just simple half square triangles but it's the way you arrange them that makes it so much fun to play with. I admit I played with the arrangement for hours until I got this. I just love the way the diamonds started to show themselves and then there's that red square trying to steal the show.
I was planning to use more of the off white and bow pattern fabric as that is the fabric I am making a crib skirt with but I ended up using less of those squares than I originally thought I would. It will be used as the backing fabric so it will be there on the back of the quilt. Since we don't know if it is a boy or a girl I think this is a pretty good gender neutral quilt. I have also made a quilt for my DIL and one for her Mom's house but I can't show you those until after the baby shower in a couple of weeks. It's just Baby Quilt Palooza here lately!

  1. You're right Lisa-I can't wait. Although it makes me feel a little old since it seems like just yesterday I was pregnant with my son who is now going to be a father. Where has the time gone!!

  2. It turned out perfect, Chris. I loved the fabrics from the start. You've a real talent for mixing and matching them. No need to feel old, Chris--being with the baby will make you feel young! Time does fly, doesn't it. It seems mine were just born and now they're in college.

  6. It sure is fun to play and see all the designs and secondary designs you can find from a simple block. Nothing like a grandbaby to bring on the creative mood *s*

  9. Thanks for all the great comments everyone. To answer some of the questions-it is all machine sewn. I used to do a lot by hand but not enough time anymore so I use my beloved Bernina and sew them. This one will be machine quilted by my friend Susan. I sometimes machine quilt my own quilts but my friend does a fantastic job so I usually let her do them. And to LindaT-You really scored with those quilts at a thrift store. I am jealous of all the great things you girls seem to find at your quilt stores. I once bought a couple of quilts at a yard sale but have never found anything good in the quilt department since.

  12. It's beautiful! how did you decide how many squares to make of which colour combinations? is there a system to it? or did you start with triangles and only sewed them to squares once you had decided on the layout?

  13. Thanks for telling me about your quilt. It's fun to see the fabric in another design. I love the diamond shape that emerges. The ribbon fabric is so fun. It lends itself to really picking up reds and blues. We definitely saw the same thing in it!

  15. First, it's just beautiful.

Second, pardon me for being a complete doofus, but I adore the fact that you made a quilt for your DIL and her mother, too. I have a 2 yr old son and the second I found out he was a boy, when I was pregnant, I started thinking about how I want to be as a MIL.

THIS is how I want to be. You are clearly a dear, dear MIL and I'm overwhelmed.

    (beautiful quilt)

In glory I will stand,
A crown perhaps upon my head,
And a needle in my hand.
